Heartland Community Schools implemented a change in their food service program this school year–the use of local beef.

Known as the Huskie Beef Program, the school works with local producers and donors to provide beef for school lunches. This ensures that high-quality beef is served to Heartland students. The Huskie Beef logo even appears on the monthly lunch calendars on days when it is served to bring awareness where the meat is being utilized. Head Cook Valorie Quiring commented, “We love cooking with local beef. It’s very rewarding to see the kids excited to come to lunch and enjoy the Huskie Beef.”

An event was held recently for the students to hear from various speakers about the program and recognize sponsors. Highlights of this assembly can be seen in the video below.

This year’s “Beef Boosters” included: Circle Five Beef, Henderson State Bank, Siebert Ag, Buller Spraying, Jim and Nora Ohrt, Henderson Irrigation, Cornerstone Bank, Kirby Smith, Kroeker & Kroeker Insurance & Real Estate, Inc., Plains Equipment Group, Greg and Dana Boehr, Chris and Linda Vanderneck, Henderson Health Care, Hiebner Body Shop, Go AG, Goertzen Farms, Mark Kliewer, Hiebner Welding, Glen and Tammy Ott, Evan Friesen, Goertzen Farms, Mark Thieszen, Gary Steingard, and Craig Quiring.

If you would like to help support the program, donations can be made or special cuts can be purchased through the school. According to the school website:

“We have some beautiful beef cuts available as part of the Huskie Beef Program here at school. The steaks are processed by our local USDA inspected Henderson Meat Processors and are available in approximately 10 lb. boxes.  The steaks are vacuum sealed for storage and we can make arrangements for the box to be picked up at a later date if that it more convenient for you.

The steaks are high quality, locally raised and processed beef and sell for $200 per box. The market price for this brand of steak is closer to $300.  All proceeds from the sales are returned to the students through the food service program here at Heartland.  Personal checks should be made out to the Henderson Community Foundation.

Give us a call at 402-723-4434 and we will help you prepare for a special event or that backyard barbeque with amazing steaks.”
