The ACS Relay for Life event can mean different things for different people and may also be experienced in a variety of ways.
The event will take place at the York County Fairgrounds on Saturday, June 11. Survivors may check-in as early as 5:30 p.m. in the 4-H building. They will receive a survivor t-shirt and tokens to use to ‘purchase’ snacks and meal items throughout the evening. Survivor t-shirts may be picked up ahead of time as well. Make arrangements to do so by calling 402-362-0446.
Official opening ceremonies and the Survivor-Only Lap begin at 7:00 p.m. Everyone is welcome to attend all evening and the food booths sponsored by each relay team are available to all attendees with monetary proceeds benefitting the American Cancer Society as well. Food items available will be everything from snacks to meal items. Participants can plan to enjoy everything from popcorn and cinnamon rolls to sandwiches and nachos. The evening includes some fun competitions and talent presentations, with music and announcements provided by a live DJ from the local radio station.
If it’s a hot day and you want to avoid the sun, plan to arrive just before dusk. The temperature should be a bit cooler and the luminary lighting will be taking place. White luminaries with names of both cancer survivors and those that have lost their lives to the disease will be lit at dusk. In case of inclement weather – the bags will line the interior of the mercantile building. If weather permits, the luminary bags will be brought outside to line the walking areas and will be lit as the sun goes down. A memorial slide show is also shown after dark that pays tribute to the many loved ones that have lost their lives to cancer. Â
The closing ceremony takes place at midnight as participants are reminded why the event takes place each year – “so those who face cancer will be supported, those who have lost their battle will not be forgotten, and that one day cancer will be eliminated.â€
TeamHenderson would like to invite anyone that is interested to bring a lawn chair and join them for a few minutes or all evening. The white TeamHenderson tent will be north of the driveway in front of the Home Ec Building.
Team members will be canvassing for donations in the next two weeks. Any donation amount is welcome and the luminaries may be purchased for a $10 donation in honor or in memory of a loved one.Â
