It was no surprise when I walked in 15 minutes early with my family for Smorgasbord that there was already a line down the hallway. After the doors opened, we slowly wound around the hallway corners waiting to reach the cafeteria. Upon coming to photographs displaying the different menu items, I heard a first-time couple in front of us trying to figure out the various foods. They laughed a sigh of relief when they recognized a picture of corn. Split opinions were also shared with them about whether to select the cooked or fried verenika. Fortunately, the servers were more than willing to dish out a mix.
For sixty years, the annual Smorgasbord in Henderson has drawn crowds and satisfied appetites. While the event has changed throughout the years, one goal has remained the same–supporting the school’s band program.
1956 was the year of the first Smorgasbord which featured the serving of chicken and corn. The parents of the band students saw an opportunity to raise money for band uniforms by providing a meal. Sixty years later, the band program at Heartland continues to be excellent and well-supported. Now, however, the Smorgasboard menu features a variety of German ethnic foods that are a rarity for special occasions such as this.
After enjoying the delectable meal, a band concert is held in the school’s south gym featuring the Jr. High Band, Sr. High Band, and the Jazz Band. This year director Royce Schweitzer also introduced members of the band from the first Smorgasbord in 1956. Many of them have since had children and grandchildren play in the band. All those who served at the event throughout the past six decades also rose and were honored for their work.
The phrase used several times throughout the evening was “community support.” The event serves as many (or more people) than the town is comprised of. On the special anniversary this year, the line ran right out the front doors of the school. An event of this magnitude is made possible by dedicated parents and grandparents of band members who pour hours into food making and serving. It is also supported by band students who willingly hop right in to help. Community members continually buy tickets and grab family and friends to bring along year after year. Faithful band instructors have spurred on student and community pride. The combination of support equals a unique event that the whole Heartland community can enjoy.
