Country school was in session at District #73E Country School house last Friday at the Henderson Mennonite Heritage Park. Heartland 4th graders enjoyed a day learning firsthand what it was like to attend a one-room country school. Dressed in vintage clothes, they were led in their morning class work by Heartland 4th grade teacher Mrs. Hiebner.

IMG_1136During a guided tour of the buildings at the park, they learned about the early settlement of the area and enjoyed hearing stories about the early struggles of the immigrants. Students brought their own sack lunches and during recess played old time games such as softball, stilt walking, Annie Annie Over, and jump roping.

In the summer kitchen, they watched as park volunteers Adeline Huebert and Marjorie Smith demonstrated vintage laundry washing using homemade lye soap, wash boards, and a ringer wash tub. Next they all learned how to make their own homemade butter which was spread on fresh homemade bread to enjoy.

The Henderson Mennonite Heritage Park is available for groups to take guided tours and learn about the early history of the area.
