4-H Enrollment Reminder

I would like to remind everyone that are interested in joining 4-H and participating at the York County Fair that the deadline for enrolling in 4-H with the ability to bring items to fair is coming soon.  If you have not enrolled and paid for your enrollment, by June 1, you will not be able to participate in 4-H at the York County Fair and we don’t want that to happen.  You can always enroll in 4-H after that date, but just not show.

It’s easy, go to http://york.unl.edu and click on the tab for York County 4-H.  You can scroll down and find information regarding enrolling online.  If you have questions or need help, call the Extension Office (402-362-5508) anytime between 8-5 and we’ll be glad to help.

While you are at our 4-H page, check out all the workshops beginning this week!  Now’s the time to register for them.

FSA News

Leann share the following and asked if I could share it in my column.  The deadline to report all spring seeded crops, CRP, and all other land uses is July 15th. If you want to have your report done in time to share with your Crop Insurance Agent, you need to make an appointment no later than June 22nd. We will also be certifying your 2016 grass, hay and pasture acres.

At your appointment you will need to provide precise acres, intended use, planting dates, and irrigation practice. Intended use cannot be revised. If you use the crop for another use other than the intended use, you should revise your certification with the actual use. If you later have a failed crop or need to replant, your certification should also be revised. This information is very important for FSA record keeping and crop insurance records.

Call the York FSA Office to schedule an appointment, 402.362.5700 ext. 2.

Cropping Update

Starting to sound like a broken record.  Not a lot of progress happened other than a few rainfall events.  For the week I had about .40” of rainfall here at the Extension office.  Producers were able to get a little more corn, soybeans and grain sorghum planted.  Our soil temperatures in the York area have averaged 58.1° F compared to our normal of 65.3° F for the past week.  Crops that are in and up could sure use a little warmer weather and sunshine.  Hopefully it will be warming up some this next week.  I just hope it does not go directly into summer.

I checked my ETgages and on average they dropped .55” for the week and the earliest planted corn I’m monitoring is between V3 and V4.  No need thinking about irrigation at this time, but .55” times .14 equals about .06” of crop water use for the week.  We received more in that in one of the little showers.  I’ll try and share weekly ETgage readings in my column each week.  If you want to check out the York Automatic weather station daily info you can at:  http://water.unl.edu/cropswater/nawmdn.  Then click on our Online ETgage, York County and the blue balloon.

I hope you’ll also check out CropWatch http://cropwatch.unl.edu.
