IMG_0971Sophomore Angelica Bassett has been nominated as this month’s Heartland Beat Student of the Month by Heartland English teacher Sarah Ostmeyer. “Angelica is a motivated and hardworking student both in and out of the classroom. She contributes to the positive and supportive nature of the school through her interaction with peers,” said Ostmeyer.

After just a few minutes visiting with Bassett, it’s easy to realize what a genuine person she is and why she was nominated. “She is always quick to help her classmates, whether she does through lending her computer charger or giving encouragement,” said Ostmeyer. Bassett readily admits, “I really love to help others.”

As a Heartland student, she is involved in several extracurricular activities that give her plenty of opportunities to do just that. She loves golf and is on the golf team in the fall and is out for track this spring. She’s a member of the Art Club, plays the clarinet in band, and really enjoys the agriculture part of FFA. In the summers, she is in 4-H and has really liked learning how to raise and show sheep.

Her first love is reading so it’s no surprise that English is one of her favorite subjects.  On the other hand, she is taking a welding class right now that she definitely doesn’t like. But she says with a smile on her face, “But Mr. Sand says I’m really good!”

She has a busy schedule and keeps a part-time job throughout the school year working at the Sunset Bowl snack bar in York where she lives. “I really enjoy my job there since the owners are close family friends.  Everyone in our family likes to bowl and my brother and I started bowling when we were young,” said Bassett. Her family also likes to go camping and she plays on the Henderson summer softball team as well.

Congratulations to Angelica Bassett for being a great role model and this month’s Heartland Beat Student of the Month!
