Thousands of bankers hosted financial education events across the country recently as part of the 17th annual Teach Children to Save Day. Since 1997, the program, sponsored by the American Bankers Association education Foundation, has reached some 5.1 million children with the help of more than 100,000 banker volunteers.
The classroom lesson component of the Teach Children to Save program involves bankers teaching students financial skills through activities, interactive scenarios, and sharing real-life experiences. The lessons cover the basics of saving, how interest makes money grow, how to create a budget, and how to distinguish needs from wants.
On Tuesday, April 30, Karla Block, Sidnee Reinsch, and Corbin Tessman, from Cornerstone Bank in Henderson and Bradshaw, visited the Heartland Elementary School 1st and 2nd grade classrooms. A book called “Rock, Brock and the Savings Shock†was read to the 1st grade class. They were presented new piggy banks to keep their money in until they can bring it to the bank. The 2nd graders learned about how to make a “planâ€, or budget, for their money. They were given materials to help them get started as well as a Cornerstone Bank sports backpack.
