Red faces, swinging clubs, and sailing golf balls! This was the sight you would have seen at various places on Galaway Creek Golf Course last Monday through Wednesday from 4:00 to 5:30 p.m. “What’s new about that?†you might ask. The answer is, many of the participants of the Huskie Golf Camp. Over 50 young golfers grabbed their clubs and headed to the links after school on those three days to learn more about golf. Some were beginners, and others had more experience, but all campers seemed to be learning more about this tricky but addictive sport. In fact, one adult volunteer said she even learned something new.
The children were separated into four groups and received instructions on driving, chipping, fairway shots, and putting. One or more adult volunteers showed each group how to hold the club, how to stand, and how to swing properly for the specific shot. Campers got a snack break each day during which they discussed respect for self, others, and the course. Most of the campers came away with a new or renewed enthusiasm for the game.
With that enthusiasm in mind, Galaway Creek has decided to offer lower green fees for ages 15 and under Monday through Friday before 4:00 p.m. Campers also received a coupon for a free round of golf with a paying adult. The coupon includes a price list of membership costs for family or student. This is a great way for children to use their time in the summer both learning and improving their skill while getting good exercise.
Grades two through eight participated free in this camp through the sponsorship of Cornerstone Bank. Camp volunteers were Jim Mestl, Paige Mestl, Gina Mestl, Tim Carr, Tonya Carr, Glen Larson, and Aaron Campbell. Truth be told, the volunteers were as enthused as the campers. Everyone agreed it was a fun opportunity.
Galaway Creek would love to see some of those red faces return to practice what they learned.
