Results from the Heartland Girls Golf team at the Fairbury Invite September 10, 2012:

This turned out to be a very tough and demanding tournament.  The course itself is not all that tough as it was in solid condition, and it isn’t all that long, but with the wind and the fast greens it turned out to be a heck of a challenge that pushed scores up higher then they normally would have been.  As a team Seward came away with the team tournament crown as they shot a 430.  Heartland was second with a 442.  This was the highest score we have shot this season in a tournament, but that was in large part due to the conditions.  We were lucky enough to have our girls really put together a solid back nine group of scores to follow what was a pretty weak front nine effort.  The front nine as a team was not what we were looking for and one of our weakest nine holes of golf as a team all year.  I was pretty disappointed in our first nine, but I was very pleased to see all of our girls come back and shoot much better on their back nine holes.

Individual Notes:

Paige Mestl won her first high school golf tournament today.  Paige came out today and really did a pretty good job of working through the wind and some tough breaks to shoot an 87 and win the tournament.  This was something that I was happy to see because she has been playing very steady golf and has worked hard and love seeing a first place finish happen for her.  I really liked the fact that Paige is getting tougher mentally and making it happen even when she has some breaks not go her way.

Lydia Quiring placed 8th overall with a score of 108.  Lydia really has stepped up and become a consistent score for this golf team.  I have been surprised by her improvement but I am becoming less surprised each time out as she just continues to shoot solid scores for us.  Lydia is really starting to make a believer out of me and I couldn’t be happier to see her get her first varsity medal today!

Steph Stamp shot a 123, Sam Boardman shot a 124, and Kaitlyn Quiring shot a 125.  All three of these girls put together a solid back nine after what was not their best front nine.  The scores may have been higher then what we wanted, but I really liked the fact that they stuck it out and scored better to help the overall team score.  There are times when just realizing that your score may not be where you want it, but that it does effect the team can go a long ways in regards to your focus.

Kaeli Lundstrom earned a JV 5th place metal by shooting a 74.  It was nice to see Kaeli earn a medal and get something for continuing work on her game.

Overall I am still happy with how we did even though we didn’t shoot down around where I think we need to as a whole.  I really like the makeup of our team both on and off the course.  This group really gets along well and I think the fact that they are always pulling for each other and are really happy for each other when the other one does well allows are girls to find a little more importance in each and everyone of their rounds.
