Thousands of bankers hosted financial education events across the country this last week as part of the 16th annual Teach Children to Save Day. Since 1997, the program, sponsored by the American Bankers Association Education Foundation, has reached some 5.1 million children with the help of more than 100,000 banker volunteers.

The classroom lesson component of the Teach Children to Save program involves bankers teaching students financial skills through activities, interactive scenarios and sharing real-life experiences. The lessons cover the basics of saving, how interest makes money grow, how to create a budget and how to distinguish needs from wants. On Tuesday, April 24, Corbin Tessman and Karla Block, from Cornerstone Bank, visited Heartland Elementary School 1st grade class and presented the My Money Neighborhood lesson. They talked about the various types of businesses and buildings in town where money would be found, they emphasized that the safest place to keep money is in a bank. The 1st graders were presented with blue piggy banks to accumulate money in until they can deposit it at the bank. The 2nd grade class learned to compare a full, healthy money tree with a growing, healthy savings account. Their money tree would have many green leaves, each identifying an amount and a specific job or way they could earn money. Adding leaves to the tree results in a full healthy tree the same way earning and saving money increases the value of a bank account. The 2nd graders were given back packs and activity pages.
