Bible Truths: “Making Decisions”

There is a way that seemeth right unto a man, but the end thereof are the ways of death.

Proverbs 16:25

Our lives are full of decisions.  What job should I take?  Where should I live?  Who should I marry?  Who is God?  How should I worship Him?

Overwhelmingly, the advice that the world gives us is to: ‘Follow Your Heart’, or ‘Trust  Your Feelings’.  Is this biblical advice?  Is this the advice that God gives us?

As we see read in Proverbs 16:25, just because it seems like the right way does not mean that it is the right way. It could be a choice that leads to deadly consequences.  The Bible says, in Jeremiah 17:9, The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately wicked.  Obviously, if we are trying to do right, it is not wise to follow something that is deceitful and wicked.  As Christians, we must reject the philosophy of following our hearts.

Where then, do we turn for counsel?  How can we make decisions?  Thankfully, God has told us where to turn.  He has given us a light to guide us on our path in life.

Thy word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path.  Psalm 119:105

Our Almighty God has given us a Book, called The Bible, that will guide us through all the twists and turns of our lives.  We can simply open up His Word, read it, study it, memorize it, and apply it to our lives and have the assurance that we are making decisions according to His will.

The entrance of thy words giveth light; it giveth understanding to the simple.  Ps 119:130

As we allow God’s Word to penetrate our mind, we will be able to see things more clearly, the darkness will recede.  He promises that, through His Word, we will be given understanding, the ability to comprehend all that faces us.

All scripture is given by inspiration of God…that the man of God may be perfect, throughly furnished unto all good works.   II Timothy 3:15,16

Sometimes, we think that the Bible doesn’t speak to the situation we are faced with.  That, however, is contrary to what God says about His own Word.  Through the words of the Bible, we are throughly furnished, we are completely equipped, to face anything that life can throw at us.

There is no wisdom nor understanding nor counsel against the Lord.  Proverbs 21:30

When we receive advice from a friend, a professional, or from the internet, we must understand that if that counsel does not agree with God’s Word, then that counsel is wrong.  This is how we know that it is poor advice to ‘Follow Your Heart’.  Following our heart is contrary to God’s Word.  May we, this week, open our Bibles and read for ourselves the wonderful counsel that is given to us by our Almighty Father.
