The Huskies Boys Basketball team came out last night scraping. With only eight boys suited up and five of those being freshman, the Huskies have promise, but are young and have a lot to improve on as they lose to Wilber-Clatonia 22-32.

The team came out hustling and working hard on every play. Junior, Brent Regier did his part under the boards coming up with several big blocks. The game felt like a defensive battle all around for most of the night with a lot of up and down the court. This was hard on the Huskies as their bench only held three guys for relief.

The Huskies did all they could getting a couple big steals and shots at the end of the 4th quarter, but just could not come up with the ‘W’. They will be back battling tonight at Twin River stating at 6:15 p.m.

Thoughts from Coach Baehr:

We were really plagued by turnovers tonight.  We didn’t value the ball enough and that really cost us down the road.  You are not going to be able to turn it over 28 times compared to just 12 by Wilber-Clatonia.  I will give Wilber-Clatonia credit as their effort and aggressive style made it tough, but we just need to do a much better job of being fundamental and doing the little things on the offensive end of the floor.   We were able to force them to shoot a lot of contested jumpshots, which kept them from really scoring a lot on us, as they were just 12 of 43 from the field, but we were unable to make that be a major factor as we didn’t shoot much better.

Our focus was to try and get the ball to our experience in Brent Regier tonight, but we were unable to really get him going, he had a really good night on the defensive end as he 6 blocks and 8 total rebounds.  We are going to have to get Brent more involved in our offense if we are looking to score the ball.  Cody Brown had a nice night on defense and doing the little things that Cody does by taking a charge and grabbing 9 rebounds.  We were led in scoring by Jordan Heinrichs as he had 12 points on the night.  He was 4 for 4 from the line.

Our effort was good throughout the night and I feel that we are putting ourselves in good positions, but we just didn’t finish the job on our possessions and make the most of them.  We played five freshmen tonight, and they got their first taste of varsity action against a pretty athletic team, and it was tough on them at times, but I feel they are going to get better and better as their experience grows.

We are young, and we are going to learn a lot each night, and it will be a challenge for our guys as we go through the season.  I think we have a team that has a pretty good chance to grow and learn, so we are going to keep our heads up and plug away.
