The loft of the Heritage Park Epp Barn was filled to the brim on March 27, as local fourth graders presented their personal research projects to family and friends. Interested parents, grandparents and community members were entertained as the students gave short presentations, sharing all they had learned throughout their research projects related to themselves, their families, and their communities. Some topics researched were their ancestors, an antique safe brought over from Russia, and the beginning of Henderson’s restaurant, Dutch Kitchen.
While gathering data, the children interviewed relatives, searched through family documents, photo albums, courthouse records, and even accessed the Internet to discover many answers to their questions. One of the highlights of that day was viewing the students’ PowerPoint presentations, created with the help of Heartland technology/business teacher, Kristy Most.
The History Fair was an opportunity for Heartland’s fourth graders to experience presenting at a real museum, while connecting history to their own lives. Even after this successful History Fair, learning does not slow down for these eager researchers; they are now in the process of beginning to gather information for their book about country school stories. Be sure to mark your calendars so you will be able to attend their book signing on Wednesday, May 18th from 1:00 to 2:00 pm. It will be an event you won’t want to miss.
