A thoughtful project from the Henderson MB Church will soon reach its home in our community.

With the theme of “Shipwrecked: Rescued by Jesus” at their Vacation Bible School last year, the church thought it would be fitting to use the offering taken throughout the week to purchase a rescue device for the community. This resulted in $669 raised for the purchase of an Automated External Defibrillator.

Throughout the VBS week last July, the students in attendance were educated about this device and given incentives if the purchase price goal was met. “As part of our VBS theme, we were shipwrecked, stranded on a deserted island. We were waiting for a rescue boat to come rescue us, or even better, Jesus to be our Rescuer. Each day that the kids raised money it allowed the rescue boat to get closer. If they raised $500, the rescue boat would ‘reach’ the island and rescue us! However, since the rescue boat could only hold a certain amount of passengers, the kids could vote on 4 VBS leaders to ‘walk the plank’ and get dunked in a water tank provided by the Henderson Fire Department. They surpassed their goal by raising $669 and had a lot of fun watching 4 leaders ‘walk the plank’.”

“Our hope as a church is to teach our kids to be involved in and give back to their local community. We have several members of the church who are volunteers on the Henderson Fire/Rescue Team. They were able to share a bit how this device would be used in our local community.” The machine doubles the chance of survival if someone is unconscious.

Due to the high traffic throughout the summer, the Henderson Ball Complex was the selected site for the machine to be installed as there was no life-saving device previously there. It will reside at the concession building. The church purchased the machine earlier this year, and it was delivered to City Hall/Henderson Recreation Department this spring. It was officially presented on Monday evening.

You too can be a gift to the community in this by educating yourself about the machine. Anyone can operate the AED, and it will give simple, easy to follow instructions when turned on. The church also purchased pediatric pads to use with the device so that it may be used with a small child.

“As a church, we are honored to be part of this community, and our hope is that the community knows they are loved and cared for.”
