Henderson was bustling with garage sales and deal-seekers last Saturday as there were over 50 garage sales in the community.  Out of these, however, was a garage sale gem of combined people who hosted a Garage Sale for Orphans, donating their proceeds to orphan care.  This was the second year in a row that this type of garage sale was done in the community by a group.

Nicole Quiring, one of the garage sale organizers, first heard about doing this kind of a garage sale through author Jen Hatmaker.  Hatmaker encouraged using garage sales to bring awareness and profits to a great cause.  When she herself partnered with Garage Sale for Orphans and was fighting against human/child trafficking, that caught Quiring’s attention as it is also an issue close to her heart.

Quiring says, “Not everyone can always send a large check to places of need, and this created a way to do that with our time and things.  I told my kids as we prepared for the first sale last year that if they were in a position where they were being harmed, I would pray that everyone I knew and didn’t know would do anything possible to get them to a safe place!  That fueled me in pulling together the first Garage Sale for Orphans.”  Her children were also able to be involved by giving away items knowing they were helping someone in need and by having a lemonade stand.

Last year’s sale was the culmination of eight people donating their items and time, and this year twelve people were able to be involved.  Three different groups in the community had recently gone through Jen Hatmaker’s study “Seven” in which they focused on simplifying and decreasing consumption.  Participants were encouraged to donate their items to the sale as Hatmaker encouraged repurposing it for a worthy cause.  Last year the group was able to raise about $1,400, and this year they raised just over $1,500.
