39 golfers participate in local golf tourney

HENDERSON, NEB.—Thirty-nine golfers participated in the 18th annual Summer Thresher Golf Classic on Saturday, August 13, at Galaway Creek Golf Course, Henderson. The 18-hole, four-person scramble tournament benefited Bethel College, North Newton, Kan.

At 11 under par with a score of 57, the first-place team consisted of Gary Steingard, Henderson, plus Atlee Preheim, Grady Pauls and Rick Penner, all of Hesston, Kan.

Awarded second place at 10 under were Ken Bergen and Dave Bridges, Henderson, Chuck Friesen, Lincoln, and Mike Peters, Kansas City, Mo.

Third place went to Larry Thimm, Steve Kyser, Leroy Janzen and Mike Goossen, all of Beatrice. The team was nine under par.

Four hole prizes were awarded. Pauls had the longest drive and also the longest putt on hole 9. Steingard made the longest putt on hole 6. A drive by John Thimm, Beatrice, was closest to the pin.

Members of the 10 teams who competed plus additional alumni, their family members and friends of the college from Bethesda Mennonite Church, Henderson, gathered for a barbecue lunch following the morning tournament. Alumni and other church members donated the food for the meal. Nearly 100 people attended.

Financial contributions received from the tournament as well as the noon barbecue went to Bethel College through its Alumni Association.

Christian Loganbill, Newton, a member of the Golf Committee of the college’s Alumni Council participated, as did five Bethel College staff members: Kent Allshouse, athletic director and track and cross country coach; Gregg Dick, head golf coach and controller; Sam Gaeddert, admissions counselor; Tony Hoops, assistant golf coach; and Toby Tyner, associate director of development. Fred Goering, director of development, and Dave Linscheid, director of alumni relations, were there to host, as well.

The committee plans two tournaments annually, the next in Hesston, Kan., on Sept. 17.

“The Threshers” refers to Mennonite wheat farmers who helped found the college in 1887. Today it is the name given the college athletic teams and an identifier for alumni.
