Summer Basketball Heats Up

Heartland Boys and Girls Junior High and High School Athletes were welcomed to Summer Basketball Camp this last week (May 30-June 3) at Heartland School.

Walking into the gym those days, you may have felt that you walked right into the heart of basketball season.  High School Head Coaches, Jonathan Baehr and Greg Veerhuesen were directing traffic and running drills as the athletes put all their effort into them.

Each day held a different focus on aspects of the game; fundamentals and defense being predominant areas.

Boys Coach Baehr said, “We’re going to be young, but we’ve got some key varsity players coming back that will help.”  Baehr is very much looking forward to the season already and is excited about getting back into the gym with the guys more this summer.

Coach Eric Wetjen will return to the court as the Girls’ Assistant Coach this coming season.  He is excited about the potential he sees for them.  Wetjen commented, “The team is stacked with talent and if they can put together a few things, this season could be very special.”  The girls varsity team has several returning starters and they are looking to go to the next level this year.

The Camp was a good way to get the teams together to start forming some camaraderie and work on improving their game.  It was a great success and will aid in the upcoming seasons.
