The District C-7 Track Meet was held in Henderson at the Heartland Track on Thursday…and Friday.  That’s right, the two day track meet was a result of inclement weather and crazy events.  The meet started at 10am with sunny skies and great track conditions.  The field events went off without a hitch.  A bit into the running events, nearing 5pm, the weather started to turn.  The sky became grey and dark and not far away, a funnel cloud was spotted.  The track meet was evacuated after the 100 and 110 meter hurdle finals and 100 meter dash, where Sara Brune and Jennifer Yoder became the first Heartland Track athletes to earn their spots at the State Track Meet.

All nine teams sought shelter in the Heartland school along with their coaches and fans.  It was approximately a two hour hold on the meet before events resumed.  The meet did not progress too much though before the second lull of the meet.  After the 200 meter finals, the second postponement took place.  This would last until about 9:30pm.  Attenders were spread among both gyms and the cafeteria.  People from the town tried to help with food since athletes and spectators alike did not plan to be at the meet at and well past supper time.  Subway actually ran out of food which left no other eatery in the area available.  The State Officials were called and they informed Meet Officials that they would like the meet to be completed, running all events Thursday night if at all possible.  So…everyone waited…and waited…until final realization that the storm was not passing anytime soon, postponement for Friday at 11am was announced.  With only three events to go, teams packed up and headed home.

Friday brought wind and wind chill.  It was a cold day to run and inevitably would not bring the best times for the competitors.  The three remaining events were finished in just over an hour and the meet will definitely be one that is remembered.  The Heartland girls finished the meet in second place overall, winning the 400 meter relay, which will also take them to Burke Stadium in Omaha.

Heartland Boys’ and Girls’ teams put in great effort against some really tough competition.  A lot of athletes finished third or fourth getting inched out of the opportunity of State, but the desire and drive was there.  It was a pleasure to watch all the athletes throughout the year and finish their season at Districts.  For Brune, Yoder and the  Girls’ 400 Meter Relay Team (Bailey Carr, Ashton Kroeker, Brune and Yoder), good luck next week.  You have the town’s support.
