Huskie Boys Battle Cardinals to the Bitter End

Although the effort was not lacking, the Huskie Boys drop the final game of their regular season, 39-41 to the Doniphan-Trumbull Cardinals.

The game heated up quickly. Things started off with Jesse Nissen getting fouled at the three point line, which was followed by a Technical Foul called on Doniphan-Trumbull. This put Nissen at the line for five free throws, which subsequently put the Huskies up by a point to end the first quarter. There was also a Flagrant foul called on the Huskies, which made it obvious this game was going to be intense throughout.

Heartland trailed by two at halftime, but did not let the Cardinals take over in the second half.  The game was neck and neck as time ticked away in the fourth quarter. It was Tanner Steingard who hit a free throw to tie the game up 38-38 with 2:00 left on the clock. The crowd played a factor in the game as they were cheering loud and proud.  The Huskie stands seemed packed with numerous alum there for alumni pep band night.

The ball seemed to end up in the Cardinal’s possession more than desired as they got their own rebound from a missed free throw late in the fourth. Although the Huskies worked so hard, once again, they came up short.  Spencer Friesen led the team in scoring with 17 points and Nissen added 10.

The team moves onto Sub-Districts Monday night at Sandy Creek against Blue Hill at 7pm.
